African Violet Growing Competition: Growing AV from Plantlet

Purposes:
1) To learn how to grow AV from a given plantlet and compete for the prizes.
2) To have fun and to develop friendship during the course of competition.

How to start?
1) All participating members are given an unknown plantlet of the same type of AV.
2) You are expected to plant and grow the given plantlet based on your own soil mix, growing method.
3) Once you have planted your plantlet, do submit your first status update in this thread by showing a full picture of your potted AV. It would be good if you could briefly describe the growing conditions that you have. For example, the soil mix used, whether it is air conditioned or not.

How often do I have to give my status update?
1) At least once at the end of every 2-week.
2) Do remember to upload the latest picture of your AV during the update

What to do if I have doubts or problems encountered?
1) You are encouraged to ask questions in this thread if you encounter any doubt or problem. This includes the method or practice by other members that you do not understand.
2) Do try to help each other out by giving suggestions to fellow members should they encounter any problem.

Is there any prize for this competition?
Yes, a pot of named AV plant will be given away to the winner for all the following three awards,

1) The First Flower Award
For the first plant that produce a full bloomed flower.

2) The Best Plant Award
For the plant with the best score (decided by the judges and the members’ voting 50% each).

3) The Second Best Plant Award
For the plant with the second best score (decided by judges and members’ voting 50% each).

Hi,
My potting mixture is the normal AV potting mix with additonal dosage of perlite and chips. I am growing the av plantlet in the living rm without a/c.

I opened up my competition bag and potted it Fri night. This morning I saw 2 plants in side the pot. I started with one of the smaller plants. Now that the tiny plant was actually 2, they're even smaller. :lol:/>

Well, guess I wont be going for the "first to bloom" competition. I'll be going for the good looking one cause I'm quite far behind in terms of size of the plant.

You can compare my plants to the size of the perlite balls.

Here's mine ..

Planted in african violet mix provided by clare + additional florabella soil
Now at home with no aircon, but will be moving it to office tomorrow.
Have not figure out how to set up wicking yet, is it ok to water it from the top for now?

Hey, I am sorry I cannot post my pic
as I am oversea le

... However, since I suppose most would have similar composite......perlite/vermiculite/peat.....

I have decided to trying something else instead.

Apart from the soil that came with the plantlet... I planted the baby av in pure vermiculite, enclosed under twin T5 (21watt) lighting.

Will post pic 3 weeks from now.

Hi!
1> Crys: "is the first time I made the wicking system, how would I know whether it works??? "
by visual inspection. Use top watering approach if you find the soil-mix is too dry.

2> Benang: "I planted the baby av in pure vermiculite."
Do take care of the nutrient supply as vermicuite may have none.

3> K0k0: "Have not figure out how to set up wicking yet, is it ok to water it from the top for now?"
Perfectly ok. Just make sure soil-mix is moist and not wet.

4> Gillie: Your soil-mix look dry. Possible to share with the type of soil-mix that you are using?

5> Ischan: "I'm quite far behind in terms of size of the plant."
Hmmm.. you have special bonus of extra plantlet. Not to worry, the plant size is not the main factor to determine the plant growth at this stage.
The most important part is to have a right growing environment for the plantlet to develop its rooting system within next few days.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u303/adn6244/Picture043-1.jpg

The baby was dirty with soil cause me clumsy when fill the pot with soil. Cleaned up during the Sumatra earthquake :hysterical:/>
Since i can't find the AV mix, I am using A.Bower's 1 portion perlite + vermiculite + peat based compost. Moved it to office today :D/>
