Hi everyone, I've only recently found out about this fantastic forum and would like to share all my knowledge on the above-mentioned topic on cloners and vertical grow towers. I have made them from materials that can be sourced locally or bought online. Discussions and feedback are more than welcome and I hope this can be a fruitful thread for all edible plant growers.

I'm currently growing Kale, Butterhead Lettuce and Spinach in my nursery for the towers. I also grow some herbs for cooking like Basil, Rosemary, Thyme and Oregano in the soil pots.

Before you build a vertical grow tower you would probably need either a nursery or a cloner, which can be built without any electrical plugs needed (hence off grid):

I got a 12V solar panel, which is hooked up to a controller that channel the electricity generated into a 12V, 7.0AH lead acid battery. It is used to power a small pump with sprinkler attached to hydrate the plants. I would recommend regular intervals of watering since cuttings usually have little or no roots - a timer can be programmed to feed once every hour in daylight. Here is the setup:

I had some success with Kang Kong

And Basil

All of these parts can be bought online via Aliexpress (solar panel, pump, sprinkler, etc), and the total cost is less than $50.

For the towers they are a little more complex and I'll cover in the next post.

The Vertical Grow Tower can be quite an addition to your balcony as it takes up very little space. Once matured, it not only provide your with hassle free vegetable but also a beautiful wall of plants.

Transplanted the basil from the cloner and propagate more cuttings:

Exactly the same! Just that of course we can't use their name "zipgrow" obviously and diy will cost a fraction of the price.

But yes, if anyone is interested I will post on how to make it + link to YouTube to show how it works.

Hi Groot,
Could you post a few photos on the current growth of your towers?
what do you think about using PVC pipe instead of conduit?
