Hi,

So I email Botanic Gardens Orchid Lab the other day and managed to get a list of orchid flask available for sale. Apparently they have vanda javierae on the list. Heard that it is quite rare and expensive if buy from outside. Also understand that it is from Philippine highland but curious if can grow in Singapore without special treatment. Because Botanic Garden won't propagate a species that cannot grow in Singapore right?

Botanic selling 1 flask for around $25+ for around 10 plant. Don't mind try try for that price if got chance.

Appreciate if someone can enlighten! Thanks you.

Interesting. Can I share the vandas with you if you buy one flask? These vanda javierae are pretty in white.

I am interested what else they are offering for sale too. Maybe can take a pic and post here if there are not too many of them.

Below is the link to an article which provides an answer to your initial question...basically they do have a cool house to grow highland species.

cheers

These are tissue-cultured plantlets. They are grown in flasks in the laboratory. After you have purchased the plantlets in flasks, you need to remove the plantlets from the flasks and slowly acclimatized (adapted) them to the outside environment.

If you are bringing these flasks overseas, phyto-sanitary certificate maybe needed. For this, you need to contact the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) for more information on this certificate. They will also assist you on the application procedure.

Below are some of the contacts for AVA.

Name :Mr Toh Jenn Peow
Email :Toh_jenn_peow@ava.gov.sg

Hope this helps.

Thanks.

Best Regards,
Koh Teng Seah

Yay!!! Let me know what else you are also buying, then maybe we can pool our resources together and get more flasks, if that is ok with you.

Yes, the orange fire is the same. But Ching Hua will definitely bring it during SGF later this year, likely in bloom, so you don't have to grow them from tiny orchids.

Hi sthh,

Just check my email and saw his reply. The javierae out of stock at the moment.. pity.. I asked him when restocking already but he may take a while before replying. He sounded very busy when I spoke to him over the phone.

I don't mind sharing actually. Which ones are you looking at? Was looking at vanda tcy and the javierae coz space constraints! Heard tcy good cultivar is hard to find. Think there is a thread on it on the forum somewhere? Some controversy like others cldnt get back the same award winning flower size and shape even when they used the same registered parents vanda jvb and dearei. Think the botanic garden one shld be the original right?
