Hello,
Firstly all avocado plants that I will be referring to are the subtropical supermarket types and local huge Avocados do not apply.
Firstly, avocados are quite evil. That's true. Avocados hate the cold but need some cool temperatures to fruit.
Now I have a wurtz avocado which is grafted and is from Australia. It has not bloomed for me for so long and I am quite literally angry with it.
Now, I did some research and found that without Cameron highlands temperatures these avocados will not bloom at all and at our wonderfully hot Singaporean temperatures, the plants will abort any flowers and not bloom. Well, if I can grow subtropical things like figs and lemons, I will not be defeated by this rude little Persia Americana (scientific name of avocado). So as what I have learnt, that is in order to fruit trees must have a resting period with less vegetive growth.
So I attacked my avocado and made it half botak.
Then after reading some research paper I learnt that shorter day length can be a factor to induce flowers.
So I covered my avocado tree with two garbage bags.
Then I learnt that farmers in Africa stop watering their avocado trees until they bloom.

So I have botakked, dried and deprived my avocado tree of sunlight starting today.
Let's see if it works, which I hope it really does.

Yes I know the frustration of paying a lot and getting a useless tree.
After kind words did not work for two years, I resorted to drastic measures.
But there is also some science and logic so i did not just hentham my tree :)/>/>

By the way, do you also have a similar avocado tree and was it from eaden lifestyle

I went to Eden after you mentioned but found none there. I even asked them but they didn't even know what I was talking about. Of course visited there many times as I visit W farm. Finally found those at W farm. Of course didn't even ask what specie and definitely didn't bother asking if it is a dwarf. You know lah there at the farm. I just chose what I think is most handsome one. :hysterical:/>

If you want avocadoes you should ask for mr. Edward.
Sadly, I paid a lot for a fruitless tree.
Yesterday, loohit told me to try with freezing the trunk with a freezing sleeve for at least 2 weeks.

You construct a box with 2 inches polystyrene insulation, wrap it around the trunk of the tree and then pack it with ice.
Will try that too. Can't wait for avocadoes.
New torture for the tree, being frozen :)/>

Well, it's not that I hate plants, in fact I love them all very much, but this avocado is different and it is just evil.
I think that this avocado is truthfully the only plant I really hate.
But the day I get some blooms, all that will change ......

I know, I had chickens and AVA enjoyed coming to my home :hysterical:/>/> . Eventually, they told me that they had no problems with my chickens but my neighbors kept bugging them so that had to come.
One piece of advice, you do not want to get in trouble with the authorities in Singapore.

And to get back on track, I have some results to report after one day:

The black garbage bag seems to stop 90% of sun light coming to the plant and growth seems to be really slowing down. There were some leaf buds which are supposed to open but they did not. So this seems good. Less growth= stressed tree= tree is getting the message and hopefully will bloom

You know, all this talk about avocadoes not fruiting in Singapore and suggested "remedies" is both surprising and alarming. Perhaps it's the type of avocado trees you have?

We had a neighbour in the old house who had a tree that fruited regularly, before it (the house, not the tree) got bought over and the new owner chopped the tree down during reconstruction. This was like 25 yrs ago. I don't remember what sort of avocado it was, or even how the fruits looked like, whether it was grafted or seed-grown, but just that we used to find the occasional fruit in our garden. I am almost sure the owner did nothing unusual, and certainly nothing untoward, to the tree. If anything, it was probably benignly neglected (also my usual preferred treatment).

Anyway, perhaps this might give the horticultural-ly angsty amongst you some hope. If not, at least it might persuade Salman Tropical to reconsider further inflicting deprivation, dismemberment or other medievally inspired methods upon a hapless sapling whose only crime was to burdened by expectations it had no way of disabusing or delivering to. :)/>/>

Excuse me. But my aunt has an avocado tree which bears fruit by the baskets. The tree is neglected and the fruit all drop to the ground cos nobody wants to eat it any more. It is a huge tree tho.

The avocado tree is in j.b by the way.
