This hideous cave as it seems are the left over remains of a dead barrel cactus.

Barrel cactus must be grown in well drain media and water very less frequently as they are extremely prone to rot when over water. From my observation, the larger and heavier the cactus is, the more it should be potted on soft media. Burn earth and volcanic mix are sharp and will damage the base during transportation for medium specimens, resulting in rot eventually. Smaller specimens does well better as they are lighter and resilient to road bumps.
