This was a treat from my younger brother and we picked Gim Tim Restaurant at Ang Mo Kio for the gathering. The place was fully booked and only the outdoor seats were left. Luckily the outdoor tables were under a tent and cooled by multiple units of air cooler so the ambient temperature was pretty comfortable.

Although the 15 days of Chinese New Year was officially over, the restaurant was still on their CNY Menu until Sunday. We opted to go ala carte rather than the set menu.

My brother said the mother-in-law doesn't eat chicken so we only ordered half the Deep Fried Crispy Chicken. Given a choice, I will always take this kind of flourless deep fried chicken which had a nice crispy skin while the meat was juicy and tender. Strange enough, this dish doesn't come with the usual salt and pepper condiment.

Stir Fried Scallop with Macadamia - The scallop was fresh, albeit thinly sliced. Would have been better texture wise if they left it thicker. The greens, bell peppers and the crunchy macadamia nuts gave this dish a touch of colours and a nutty flavour to boot.

Home Made Bean Curd with Melon - The melon here was actually used as a base for the bean curd which was drizzled with crab meat and roe sauce. This helps lift up the overall flavours to the otherwise bland tofu and melon.

The menu only had the steamed cod fish but my brother requested for the Deep Fried Cod Fish. The crispy light batter hide a buttery and flaky flesh within that had a melt in your mouth texture.

My mum loves Crispy Suckling Pig so we just had to order it for her. Their house special was with a spicy base so we went with what the waitress recommended. The suckling pig came roasted to a golden brown hue and served on a shimmering golden plate; best of all, no pre-order in advance required. Sandwiched between the crispy cracking skin and a thin layer of meat was the collagen (call it fats if you must). Underneath all these was a rub of spices which gave it the kick yet not too strong to overpower the flavour of the meat. When you take a bite, first impression was the cracking of the crispy skin, next as you began the chewing, the oil/juice oozes out and the spices fired up inside your mouth. Only the pig head was left after we were done with it and we asked to pack it home.

I adored the Hokkien Fish Maw Thick Soup which was choked with ingredients yet not too starchy to the taste.

PS: The pig head was put to good use a couple of days later when my mum cooked it with the preserved vegetable (梅菜).

Prawn with Pumpkin Cream - Large de-shelled prawns coated with a sweet pumpkin cream which doesn't seem to do justice to the succulent prawns. The sweet cream just overpowered the natural sweetness of the crustacean plus it was on top of yet another bed of sweet fruit cocktail.

The wonderful aroma coupled with a light bitter sweet taste of this Coffee Pork Ribs was made even more enjoyable with the use of ribs with bits of fat clinging to it instead of just pieces of lean meat.

For dessert, we had Deep Fried Ice Cream. On the outside, it resembled fried dough but once you cut it open, the melting vanilla ice cream spilled out. Taste wise I found it rather plain but then I never liked vanilla flavoured ice cream in the first place. Maybe if they had substituted it with chocolate ice cream, I might just enjoyed it more. My nephew was asking his daddy to make this for him at home.
