Fittest Day 108

It's been a while since I've posted something. There is nothing much happening except massive growth of algae in "Fittest's" pot. I am beginning to worry about root rot and think I should do something about it. I see the Sphagnum always opens up after a while. It's not as stable as I think as a potting media for VFT seedling.

I made plans for proper soil mix for seedling and young VFT. Decided on Silica sand and Peat Moss so I could mix 50 / 50. I've been to a few place, peat moss was easy find but silica sand wasn't. Deciding not to waste more time n effort on sand, I went ahead with perlite.

This is how "Fittest's" pot look like, now I'm very sure it's algae and I should do something about it.

The product I bought, perlite and peat moss. Rinse them and soak them in distill water for a while. Mix 50/50, don't really like the look of the outcome, prefer sand but never mind, as long as it does it's job. I drop the new pot into a water tray of distill water so it would moist the soil.

I took "Fittest" out very slowly by using a large tweezer to pick it from a larger area, then I drop "Fittest" into a small cap of distill water to rinse off the sphagnum. Took a few photo. On the new pot, I made a small opening on the top soil with the tweezer and gently place "Fittest" root in, then gently use my fingers to close the soil around it. Now "Fittest's" in it's new home and I hope it stays there and grow well for at least the next whole year or so.

Swimming in the pool!

"Baby" a typical Cephalotus cutting from Dec 2012 so it's 3 months old now.

Just some picture update on it's growth. Photo taking with My mobile phone and a magnification lens attached. "Baby" has been putting out a - 2 more pitcher, looks like it's growing well :)/>

As you see, I'm always not happy with something and I need to fix what I think I need to. I dislike the greenish slimy algae on some of the top soil of those new VFT and bottom of the pot. I also wanted them in bigger pots and am thinking of doing some pulling as well. This is going to be a long post. I'll try to keep it short, posting same stage of my procedure. It would make comparing much easier. Here goes...

Some of my thoughts before I started off was, to keep them in 100% dead sphagnum or Peat/Perlite. I tested both soil with the water I've soak them and the were both below 15PPM. I've decided on Peat/Petlite coz sphagnum looks too messy on the surface.

First, I took them out of the pot to inspect the soil, I've observe that only the top and some bottom were algae rich, but not the middle. Sphagnum breaks open easily but I hate how the roots were tangled in some of those moss twigs/stem. I was also in for a little surprise...

I've started off with Dantate X Dantate Seed Grown. I didnt think how roots these plant would have, it was a little thick too.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8085/8561804599_12bc3ce889_o.jpg

Next I remove Big Mouth x Big Mouth Seed grown.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8369/8562979760_eb68056c25_o.jpg

I was in for a little surprise when I saw another small white part. Didn't think they divert at a year growth from seed.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8228/8561858865_4e92c0e9b0_o.jpg

Last was the Red Piranha clone.

As the post limits image input, i need to break up by post.

The next step was to very carefully removing as much sphagnum in the roots as I could. There was more effort in this as some roots were really thin like hair, fragile too. I have some back ache after I finish the last plant. http://www.greenculturesg.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif

Dantate X Dantate Seed grown, boy the rhizome was long! I wonder why it didn't divert out a part or 2. Could it be uniquely different? Or was it the growth condition that it didn't think it was ready to divert out.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8095/8561798969_5dbbcf1db5_o.jpg

Big Mouth X Big Mouth Seed grown, after carefully cleaning it I was taken back when I see another small rhizome drop loosely. This one has 2 diversion! Nope! I didn't break it.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8225/8562981664_cc2b3a4b79_o.jpg

Here are some individual photos of the 3 Rhizome

And of coz I took some effort to measure the entire plant length too, this will give be some views on how they were all grow in same pot in sphagnum and later for me to compare again in the peat/perlite I'm going to use for them.

Dantate X Dantate: The entire plant length was about 11 cm from plant top to root bottom
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8366/8562912400_e1cda5fdf4_o.jpg

Big Mouth X Big Mouth: There were about 10, 11 & 14 cm long.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8098/8561858317_07b01f3b72_o.jpg

Red Piranha: 2.5 & 8 cm long, now this makes me wonder if bigger traps has longer roots. :?:
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8530/8564438546_a6fef6371f_o.jpg

And as you would have already thought or guessed, I took this opportunity to do some leaf pulling and even use a scalpel to cut off a part of a rhizome that has no leaf but only root attach. Some attempt were not good as some leaf didn't bring along part of the rhizome. But I'll try to grow it in 100% LFS anyway.

Dantate X Dantate Seed grow, I think this is a good part as it took along some rhizome, but the trap could have been already settle instead of a young growing trap which I think makes a batter pulling.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8109/8564533570_95839e0dfe_o.jpg

Big Mouth X Big Mouth seed grown, a leaf pulling which almost didn't have a part of rhizome and a rhizome that didn't have any leaf but has a long root. I'm eager to see how these 2 turns out later.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8105/8562980082_4339e07f90_o.jpg

A Closer view on the rhizome, some old leaf has died off, so I'd use a scalpel to cut off this part of the rhizome
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8511/8562980746_9164e90461_o.jpg

And the Red Piranha, I took 2 leaf pull. 1 came off well with a small part of rhizome, the other didn't take any. So let's see how it goes later.

They are now a little stress from repoting, lets hope they will recover in a few days time.
Dantate X Dantate has no clone, so this is the sole pot
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8250/8564468118_ca8b9fb183_o.jpg

Big Mouth X Big Mouth, this is the biggest of the 3
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8110/8563366407_214b86e57e_o.jpg

This is the smallest of the 3 if I remember correctly
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8388/8564556422_12973bba20_o.jpg

And this clone, my friend will be taking it later, I've decided to give him the nicer orientation of the 2 small pot
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8233/8564469548_5341d82c33_o.jpg

Red Piranha, this is the bigger of the 2
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8521/8564555766_4d4d27f499_o.jpg

The smaller one goes back to the same pot it came from because of it's short root and small size.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8392/8564556014_5a6345ffba_o.jpg

I also took the opportunity to pull off the biggest leaf of my cephalotus, it didn't reach down the rhizome and I couldn't see it too.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8390/8561699933_b57430e14f_o.jpg

Now these babies are sitting in this container to keep them humid with a cover.

I've not been updating due to server down for numerous times. So here goes....
23 March to 16 May

Ti§h's VFT - 23rd Mar Shark alert!

Acquired a Shark's teeth. It's origin from Triffid. I think the MO was in Aug 2012. I really like the cilia on this one http://www2.greenculturesg.com:8080/forum/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif

http://sphotos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-frc1/906977_10151370341367297_1394483245_o.jpg

Ti§h's VFT - 25th VFT Spree!

I went to World Farm Nursery, see some very nice VFT and could not help myself taking 2 pots home. They are typical but has very unique traits. One with very big traps and long cilia, very similar to a "Low Giant". The other has cilia which look like the "Dantate". I just can't help myself comparing and taking the biggest home.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8096/8588705577_1f8bb96680_o.jpg

Ti§h's VFT - 29th 3 more CPs!

I have obtained another 3 more CPs. A Drosera Tokaiensis, and the other 2 is of the same VFT plant but have split. It's a cultivar which was bought from CZplant by the original seller. 1 was a full plant and the other was just a small rhizome and a long root.

I didn't like the last minuted potting so I've re-potted them. Any advise on how to keep a Drosera would be helpful to me as this is my first.

Didn't like how it was potted, the rhizome was exposed.

After Re-potted
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8380/8599009541_a1d7de4dd2_o.jpg

Rhizome and long root. I potted this in a 4 inch peat/perlite mix, hope it'll strike

Ti§h's VFT -30th Fungus Gant?!

If you remember about a week ago, I bought a typical VFT, what seems like Dantate from World Farm Nursery. I re-potted the plant in to 2 pot and 1 of them seems like it wasn't growing and turning black, thinking not to let it grow fungus/mold. I remove the dead traps but after a few easily attempts, the entire top came off easily. What seems to be was the bottom was rotting away and I thought I saw something moving, and I saw more! I suspect they were fungus gant.

Here's a photo of what it looks like before re-potting and the rotting soil video.

Ti§h's VFT - 31st Photo Updates

Just updating my overall VFT with heavy photos.

"Santa" is gone for good. I cannot revive it after leaving it in NZLFS for more than a month. The entire LFS turns green with algae too and I see no sign of VFT seedling. All the In-vitro has no progress. So I clear them out. I still have "Rojak" batch but no germination. "Fittest" is still growing. I think it's on it's 6th trap and should be putting it's 7th soon?

Here are the Photos of overall:

The last newly acquired cultivar "Cupped Trap" it's not entirely mine. The one has change hands at least 3 times that I know of, and it's origin from CZplant

Ti§h's VFT - 3rd April Some stuff came...

After some "very" long wait and many episode of long distance communication. Some stuff has finally reach my hands.

After being kept in the box for 2 long duration and change hands a couple of times and repot a couple of times by 1st timers....
I'm happy I still have what's remain of the Clayton's red sunset here...Sorry to the seller...

Ti§h's VFT - 4 April Once bitten twice shy

It's very frustrating when you see another pot of VFT rot away. It's from the same diversion that rot away earlier this week. So the entire pot was bad under soil. I remove the plant and throw away what ever was rotting and salvage 3 good traps and 2 that looks ok. Had them potted in NZLFS and 1 was in-vitro from my last extra bottle.

Arghhhh!!! Careless... Lucky it was a typical from World farm. But I like this one alot.

Ti§h's VFT - 5th April Boost in a bottle

I do house chores... and as much as I like to keep my house clean. The crawlers always make their appearance a week later... So I had supplies.... of crawlers..

Boost for the evil jaws....

Ti§h's VFT - 8th April Photo Updates

"Fittest" has been growing pretty well. I counted 7 traps in total and there should be 8 but the very first one could have withered. If you have follow my post from page 1. "Fittest" is my very first seed grown when I started this hobby, bought from Ebay, sent from Indonesia as the Stamp indicated http://www2.greenculturesg.com:8080/forum/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif

Re: Ti§h's VFT - 10th April Clayton's burns

I'm not sure if it was the extreme stress or the sun that is burning my Clayton's Red Sunset. I also don't think there were any chemicals in the soil, probably the lack of sun on and off over the month and sudden sun. But if it's not the case and if it goes on. I'm going to left with "Tish no sunset".

Burns here, there, everywhere...

Ti§h's VFT - 12th Apr Red Piranha pulling has a strike!

A Good news and a Bad news.

Start with the good first... The 'Red Piranha' pulling I took earlier when I was repoting has a stike! I don't see the callus but I only see s small trap popping up lol. Looks kinda funny. This is my very first strike after a few attempts, quite happy for now. Also gives me the opportunity to observe how they form.

'Red Piranha' pulling
A stapler bullet for reference, bullet has a dimension of 5mm by 10mm
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8535/8643308582_bb5ca62bff_o.jpg

Looks like the trap is developing.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8119/8642206833_7c7333b967_o.jpg

I took a closer look but did not see callus, looks like the part the trap pops up was from the darker centre of the rhizome. I wonder if that is the ideal part where they make new traps. Kinda make sense but I don't know. I also wonders if pulling don't strike with callus was normal since I've been seeing post with callus.

Now the bad news. I've sown some fused teeth seeds and Drosera seeds in peat/perlite. Not sure if covering them has cause mold to form. I'm quite unhappy over mold forming especially on Dionaea M. seeds as I face same issue before mentioned earlier in this same thread. I went to rub off the mold from about 6 Dionaea M. seeds and resow them. I hope they germinate soon.

Ti§h's VFT - 13th Apr Sky Diving!

It was really exciting! I was trimming my traps off the dead leaf when my 4 months girl wail away. I hurried to put back my pot where 'Red Piranha' and "Fittest" sits, and they topple over?... and roll off the window!! While my heart skip a beat, I swear I could hear both of them (vft) shouting weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee........ as if they just hopped off for sky diving!!

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8385/8644922570_1fe3ac1d4a_o.jpg

I hurried down stairs , went into the bushes and took a very long time looking for them, first I found back 1 tag "Fittest", then "Red sky diver" was resting on a big rock with no soil left. Found 1! I almost wanted to cry out for not being able to find "Fittest". I was pissed and had to take care of my girl so I went back upstairs with the end of my precious "Fittest", lost... forever!!! I thought to myself for being so careless, I wasn't angry but just very sad. My very first VFT and also one and only seed grown. LOST!

I went back up to repot the "Red Sky Diver", I'll call my this particular 'Red Piranha' that now! Sadly sitting alone in the pot with no company. I place in a water tray while I clean up the mess at the window. Picked up some soil and turn it over. OMG!! "Fittest's" ass is still stuck in that compact chuck of soil!! http://www2.greenculturesg.com:8080/forum/public/style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif He didn't had a part of the fun! So I said to it, "I thought I lost you" and quickly make some room in the same pot for "Fittest".

Now they are happily sitting together again. "Red Sky Diver" and "Fittest" Now, no more dangerous stunt fellas!

Total lost : A cup worth of peat/perlite and 1 tag, almost lost my heart.

Sharkie went mad

15?! That's an amazing growth!

I also realised recently that multiple grow also happen to my shark teeth but not as many. Last month, I split my shark teeth rhizome into 2, recently and the older rhizome has only about 4 existing traps, they look very weak but probably due to stress of repoting and splitting. I feed a bug to the last open trap and now there seems to be 4-5 little greens poking out of the soil. I also don't know if it was the feeding or summer's magic.

There is 2 from this photo

3 more from this angle omitting the big one on the right, there is 2 together on the left and 1 in the middle.

Ti§h's VFT - 23rd April 2013 Soil Prep.

I went to buy more Peat Moss as I thought I would need more soon. i prepared the soil medium early so I could have the soil ready by then.

I took a closer look at my general supermarket's common item "Horti Moss" and confirmed that it's suitable for VFT. Funny I interpreted wrongly the last time of partially decompose sphagnum as partially sphagnum. Well good to know I'm using the right now.

I bought a really cheap cloth protection against washing machine abuse and it worked well holding the medium during the rinse process.

Ti§h's VFT - 23 Apr 2013 Photo update

I was monitoring Shark Teeth's new traps and notice they develop quite fast. Probably is a desperate measure from itself. Knowing it's 4 only traps are going to withered thus the 10 young traps.

Shark Teeth: Was this a desperate growth?

Day 153, "Fittest" has grown more. Now I notice the cilia were getting more "normal" than it's first trap's cilia. The measurement is in mm. So it's about 5mm across.

Ti§h's VFT - 24 Apr 2013 Inspiration

I was inspired by another forum's member photo where his CP stands out from dark. I followed his method in attempting to achieve the dark background. However it's still doesn't stand out like how well he did with his CPs.
