Today’s Lunch bought from economy rice stall which is a food stall commonly found in hawker centres, street vendors or food courts in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Economy rice stalls typically consist of a glass case containing anywhere from 10-15 troughs of cooked food, including meat, vegetables, eggs and tofu dishes. Customers select any combination of these dishes, which are served accompanied by a portion of steamed white rice.

Wasn’t feeling too well so I went for a light meal at One Sushi (一口寿司) in Yishun Town Square. Watching plate after plate scroll by in front of me on the conveyor belt until this Uni Gunkan came into sight. Quickly grabbed it off the belt for a more detail inspection just to be sure it is real sea urchin or to be more precisely, sea urchin’s gonads. As one can see, this is no top quality uni which can cost from more than S$10 apiece. Here, a plate of two sushi cost just S$1 and that equal to just 50 cents apiece!!! What’s more surprising is that it tasted very decent, even better than some from the higher end restaurants. Presentation wise, it is more like sea urchin paste compared to the whole lobe of uni used in more expensive outlets.

Other favourites of mine are the Ikura Gunkan with the umami popping seasoned salmon roes and the flavourful Unagi Sushi.

Let me introduce you to Fluffy Cream Roll Japanese Peach (白桃瑞士卷) from patisserie Châteraisé. Unlike the Swiss rolls you can buy from any neighbourhood bakery, this one had a much higher “cream-to-cake ratio”. The confectioner’s custard is flavoured with white peach with actual pieces of syrup soaked fruit embedded within. All these rolled in-between a fluffy and soft pink sponge cake that tasted so peachy just like the real thing. If a single slice (S$2.20) is not enough to satisfy, there is a whole cake option at S$17.

Lunch is a braised chicken drumstick and steamed egg custard rice packed from mum’s daily commute to Chong Pang market.

This Pork & Shrimp Dumplings Soup is from Choo Chiang Roasted Meat Noodle House (珠江烧腊面家), a chain of hawker stalls specialising in selling Roasted Duck, Roasted Pork, Char Siew and noodles. I love the coarsely minced pork with the crunchy pieces of shrimp in a flavourful soup.

Mum taking a rest on weekends so it’s pizza for dinner. Ordered two regular pizzas for S$22 plus a choice of free side. Very Beefy married cabanossi sausages and ground beef with a hint of onion.

BBQ Chunky Chic comes spicy chicken & pineapple chunks and onion, baked on a sweet and smoky BBQ sauce. I went with Chicken Pop for the free side.

Colleague introduced Common Chefs Bistro to me long ago but I never found the time to dine there until today. Instructing mum not to buy me breakfast or brunch depending on when she comes back from her marketing trip, I made my way there.

Decors at Common Chefs is rustic and warmly lit with wooden accents for the furnishings. The earthy ambience is good for lazing around over a cuppa or two. On the walls are pictures of appetizing food but you will not find any of them in the menu. Upon sitting down, you are presented with the Menu and told to order at the counter though they will serve the food and drink to your table.

Started off with a cup of Matcha Latte (S$5) served in a matching green colour cup and saucer. This is my first time having matcha beverage done this way but I fell in love with it on the first sip.

https://66.media.tumblr.com/921e7766f00c72dbf57fc37f2dda5487/e15c17e82e6ce50f-c7/s640x960/edb448c6369b0522fd35dc7a1e55a3bfb639c903.jpg

Feeling wealthy today, so I ordered the Rich Man Burger (S$16) which is only available on weekends. Chorizo patty, smoked cheddar, sautéed mushrooms, caramelized onions and scrambled eggs with truffle mayo sauce between two buttered brioche buns and a side of tater tots. Also at the side is a jar of melted cheddar sauce to drizzle over the burger.

https://66.media.tumblr.com/f46d48cac62017e4d4fefef604fd68a3/e15c17e82e6ce50f-0f/s1280x1920/5a5388ab728a603b1bab4ad98c9ac25da9b3e1de.jpg

The patty is made from the spicy pork filling of Chorizo sausage minus the casing. It is a tad salty on its own but when paired with the rest of the ingredients in the burger, it worked beautifully though I couldn’t detected any hint of spiciness. Do pour over that jar of cheddar sauce; all of it! Gave the dish a creamy savoury flavour. Good dipping too for the tater tots or grated, deep-fried potato.

Its peak lunch hour and most food outlets are packed with diners and more in the queue. Manhattan Fish Market has no queue and they have a Weekday Lunch Set promotion going on so this place will have to make do for lunch since I was in a rush. My blue Gummy Bear Mocktail and Mincy Chix Soup came served in just a few minutes but I had to wait for an eternity for the main course. Found out someone had placed order for many freaking boxes of fish & chips for takeaway!

https://66.media.tumblr.com/6c2b65863874c635c8bde439eac37643/da20cf1df173eb1f-c2/s640x960/682297069867e2dd1fa304288aea834f7cc1d32e.jpg

Finally my Crunchy Shrimps & Fried Dory Nuggets (S$12.95) made the trip to my table after the wait staff had to pop into the kitchen for a couple of times to check the order. The shrimps and fish were beautifully flash fried to a crispy exterior and moist inside. The Handcut Chips which had its own line in the receipt was well, just potato chips which frankly wasn’t easy to eat with a fork and knife. There is also an assortment of self-service dipping sauces if you need them though my dish came with one.

I love their Manhattan Mud Pie (S$5.95) but was dismayed to see in inflation had set in and the serving portion is now one third smaller. Nonetheless, I still enjoyed the gooey chocolate ice cream filling sandwiched in-between two crumbly Oreo chocolate crusts, drizzled with rich chocolate syrup.

When white chocolate meets strawberry, you get McDonald’s newest dessert - White Choc Strawberry Cream Pie (S$1.50). Bite into a warm and flaky crust filled with luscious white chocolate filling, coupled with the sweetness of strawberry bits.

Took a 15 minutes’ walk from Fort Canning MRT to get to The Herencia. The building is now being used by varies company’s offices and also house a few food and beverage outlets. But I am only interested in restaurant cum bar In Bad Company and patisserie Kura which share the same premise.

In Bad Company is both a bar and restaurant. Whether you come here to chill or dine, they got it all though the food menu is kind of sparse. As it was still too early for drinking, there isn’t any customers around except me. Looked through the menu and drink list to pick my main course and a cold beverage then settle down to cool down from this hot humid weather.

My ice Hazelnut Latte was served. Hmmm, this tasted exactly like those 3 in 1 instant hazelnut coffee mix, yet I am paying S$7 for it!

Thank goodness, the Seafood Basil Arrabbiata Linguine with spicy tomato based cream sauce was loaded seafood. The prawns were crunchy and succulent while the clams and mussels were plump and sweet. This is one of the better pasta dish I had in a long time. While I was drafting this review, I noticed that the wait staff had charged me S$20 for the linguine although the menu clearly indicate it was S$18!

Lunch settled, let’s talk about sweets which brings me to Kura. It’s the main reason I made the trip here. This hidden gem of a patisserie at The Herencia sells Japanese inspired confections at between S$4 to S$7 for small and medium portions. Even at these wallet-friendly prices, the owners does not compromise on quality.

Unlike In Bad Company which deals with “main courses”, the patisserie it co-share the premise with, sells finger foods, pastries and desserts. This way they both don’t overlap on the food range offered. On the day I went, there were 18 selections of Cakes and Tarts to choose from excluding whole cakes. Now, browse through and drool at the tantalizing images of desserts.

Faced with so many mouth-watering selections, I really wished my stomach could fit in all the desserts in front of me. After debating with myself, I went with the ones from the last three rows. The Mango Pot (S$6) attracts me with its stack of mango cubes and pearls piled on a groovy roll of sponge cake. Cutting through the cake reveals the mango mousse in the centre. Overall, the dessert is sweet; the acidity of the fruit somewhat easing the sugar rush a little. I do enjoy the juicy burst of sweetness from the pearls though.

The Earl Grey Tart (S$4) is my personal favourite of the three desserts I tried today. Sliced in halves, one can see the distinct layers of almond cream and chocolate ganache with a whirl of Earl Grey infused cream on top. The balance of sweetness and creaminess punctuated by the occasional crunch from the cacao nibs and chopped cashews along with the light fragrant of earl grey make this a winner for me.

Black Forest cake (S$6.50) envisioned as a glistening chocolate coated sphere and chantilly cream flower topped with a syrup soaked dark cherry. That is how I would describe it. The gold leaves just adds a touch of elegant to the dessert. Taking off a section, revealed a filling of cherry compote surrounded by a luscious 70% chocolate mousse with a thin layer of sponge cake at the bottom. All these sat atop a hard biscuit pedestal. The tangy berries offer sharpness to the otherwise rich and creamy mousse as is the bitter coat of chocolate in toning out the sweetness.

The Instagram worthy handcrafted desserts and pocket friendly prices are the main draws for this out of the way patisserie. At the cashier, I spoke with the owner telling her I would be back again to try the other desserts while also asking to pack a medium size Earl Grey Tart (S$6.50) and Mango Pot (S$6) for mum and sis.

Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋节) is an East Asian and Southeast Asian harvest festival celebrated notably by the Chinese and Vietnamese people. The festival is held on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar, corresponding to late September to early October of the Gregorian calendar with a full moon at night. A notable part of celebrating the holiday is the carrying of brightly lit lanterns, lighting lanterns on towers or floating sky lanterns. Another tradition involving lanterns is to write riddles (灯谜) on them and have other people try to guess the answers.

Mooncakes, a rich pastry typically filled with sweet-bean or lotus-seed paste is one of the hallmark traditions of this festival. In Chinese culture, a round shape symbolizes completeness and reunion. Thus, the sharing and eating of round mooncakes among family members during the week of the festival signifies the completeness and unity of families.

Teochew Crispy Yam with Whole Egg Yolk (酥皮单黄芋泥) from East Ocean. This perennial favourite is filled with rich, melt in the mouth yam paste in crust of delicate crispy swirl layers. For this Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋节), it is selling at a grand price of S$68 per box of 4s which is pretty expensive considered the simple ingredients used.

Xin Cuisine’s Low Sugar White Lotus Seed Paste with Double Yolk traditional baked mooncake, a gift from my sister’s friend. This year, almost every bakeries are coming out with low sugar version of their mooncakes. As usual, they tried to outdo each other with beautiful designed containers, boxes and carrying bags. This carrying bag is actually a cooler bag made to look like some expensive handbag while the mooncakes themselves are contained inside this Red & Gold Gift Box.

The description for McDonald’s Roasted Sesame Ebi Burger go like that: Make your taste buds jump for joy with one, or make it two, lightly crunchy patties, with juicy shrimp! Tucked between a black and white sesame bun with crisp lettuce and our new roasted sesame mayonnaise. Mum saw the TV commercial and said to me that it look nice to eat so I bought burgers for her and myself. She later asked me where are the shrimps in the burger. I told her the patty only contains few broken pieces of shrimp meat and the rest made up of prawn or fish paste. There is practically no shrimp taste to mention off. This is clearly false advertising!!!

China-based Nayuki (奈雪の茶), a popular cheese tea chain is renowned for its tantalising fresh fruit tea and soft-euro bread. Sis bought the Pitaya Cranberry Cheese, a large donut-like ring dyed pink with dragon fruit and filled with dried cranberry and cream cheese.
