We are off for lunch after shopping for a replacement washing machine and ended up at Bei Sheng Seafood (北胜泰国小食) in Yishun. It was already near to their closing time of 2pm and the aircon dining area was off limit but they let us sit at the alfresco area. Made a quick order of four dishes that came in less than 10 minutes, minutes apart. First up was Thai Fish Maw Soup (泰式鱼漂羹), which is choked full of the good stuff, the dried swim bladders of large fish.

https://66.media.tumblr.com/fe1b0d7392f7d32758c92286b57de33c/tumblr_inline_poxbwldteP1vny3ht_1280.jpg

Kang Kong with Belachan (香炒辣空心菜) was so good. Here they used the younger shoots of the water morning glory or water spinach whichever you called it so it is less fibrous. Together with the fermented shrimp paste and chilli paste is given a quick stir-fry. Vegetables never smell so delicious!

https://66.media.tumblr.com/5bef44aa16edee159b90c3c2e1e587cb/tumblr_inline_poxbysBuo01vny3ht_1280.jpg

Next up, Thai Deep Fried Fish Delight (泰式三味鱼), a favorite for my family. The grouper fish is deep-fried in very hot oil to get a nice crispy crust yet the flesh remained flaky and moist. The accompanying chilli sauce also played an important role, giving the fish an added dimension of tangy-sweet flavours with a little heat.

https://66.media.tumblr.com/6a100b6352aeec16b8db09e97df2de3e/tumblr_inline_poxbzo5e2b1vny3ht_1280.jpg

While the fish was good, the standard of the Deep Fried Cuttlefish (炸墨鱼) was lackluster. The thicker than usual cuts of cuttlefish was overcooked, rendering the texture toward rubbery although the seasonings and crispiness were spot on.

Although the food is not Thai authentic but more localized to suit our taste buds, it’s very reasonably priced. Our meal of three seafood and one vegetable dishes only cost S$48 including the rice for four adults and a child. They used to have another branch located in Yishun Industrial Park but closed it last year.

Don’t know what to eat for dinner so it is sushi again. Got my favourite Aburi Salmon and Salmon Duo at S$4 per bento. Thick cuts of blowtorch seared, semi-cooked salmon brushed with sweet unagi sauce and a sprinkling of sesame seeds are just so good. The other bento comes with four pieces each of salmon and salmon belly sushi which are “belly belly” yummy too. :D/>

Many customers were queuing for McDonald’s new soft-serve ice cream flavour - Coffee Milk Tea Cone (鸳鸯) including me. The strong tea flavour came through loud and clear with a barely there coffee hint.

Breakfast today is Braised Chicken Noodle. I much preferred this type of egg noodle that remain springy and not form a lump when left untouched for a while.

With more hot days to come, the dessert shops are doing brisk business. Here are my indulgences – Coffee Milk Tea Hot Fudge Sundae and Fruity Ai-Yu Jelly (水果晶球爱玉冻).

Mum usual order of Crispy Fried Fish when we dine at Astons Specialities. As for me, I went for the Prime Ribeye X’tra Cut to cure my hunger.

Chocolate Chip Scones or Biscuits depending on where you are reading this. Ate it with a big cup of non-sweetened Milk Tea for breakfast.

Brought mum to Chic-a-boo for the first time to let her try the Fish Fillet Burger. It came with a battered fish fillet, mayo, shredded lettuce, tomato and a slice of cheese. Mum said she enjoyed the burger as the fish was crispy and well-seasoned.

Although this was supposed to be a side order and I am glad I asked on the serving size as this Pot Pie turned out to be way bigger than I thought it would be. Thanks goodness I did not add a burger to my order else I would have difficulty finishing them all. The “bowl” was so crispy and flaky on the outside and absolutely chewy on the inside, just nice to soak up the creamy soup. I would definitely eat it again the next time I patronized them.

Bought the Mongolian Chicken (蒙古鸡) to add on to the Stir-fry Kangkong dish mum had whipped up. Also I had a bottle of Korean Pickled Radish sitting in the fridge so this got utilized too.

For a gathering, my colleagues suggested we go to Shin Minori Japanese Restaurant (新稔り) for their ala-carte buffet. Went to their webpage to make reservation and just nice the restaurant is having its 12th anniversary promotion, offering S$12 off every Omizu buffet.

The place was still pretty empty since it was only 11.30am and as the waitress lead me to our table, so told me I need to have the Entertainer app to enjoy free flow drink and a dessert. Told her that the restaurant is having a promotion and she still look or pretended to be clueless until I loaded up the page on my handphone and showed her. Finally she told me you need to show/mention the promotion to enjoy the offer.

Everyone was famished so I started ordering through the tablet. The Chuka Idako (Seasoned Mini Octopus) and Chua Ika Sansai (Seasoned Squid Salad) came in no time. Most of us love the sourish sweet taste of the squid salad which opens up our appetite.

https://66.media.tumblr.com/0f3e30faf5efdaafa2efe7ed53849c67/tumblr_inline_pq413nGxeh1vny3ht_1280.jpg

I have not seen the Kabocha Chawanmushi (Pumpkin Egg Custard) offered elsewhere other than the normal Chawanmushi (Steam Egg Custard). The pumpkin sauce gave an earthy sweet flavour to the silken egg custard.

https://66.media.tumblr.com/1d79ed53f3073ac085a524e548cd6e19/tumblr_inline_pq413tkhhy1vny3ht_1280.jpg

Nooooo, my favourite Mekajiki (Swordfish) sashimi was out of stock when we were there. :(/> So our plates of Sashimi Moriwase (Assorted Sashimi) came with only Maguro (Tuna), Shake (Salmon), Hamachi (Yellow Tail), Tako (Octopus) and Ika (Cuttlefish). Not sure of it is due to the shortage of swordfish, they included a portion of Salmon Belly in the order as a compensation. The slices of fish were so fresh and sweet that they barely need the soya sauce and wasabi to complement it.

Asuparagasu Be-kon Shioyaki (Grilled Asparagus Bacon) - Who doesn’t love BBQed salty cured meat and crunchy shoots of asparagus. I know we all do. And they forgotten my order of Asuparagasu Be-kon Kuro Kosho (Grilled Asparagus Bacon with Black Pepper).

https://66.media.tumblr.com/5c88f60cb6d5629161c142757a32748e/tumblr_inline_pq40osx7KI1vny3ht_1280.jpg

The Gyoza (Pan Fried Dumplings) were not too bad but I had better elsewhere.

https://66.media.tumblr.com/4542ad16742dc55576d1b8b2784bed3c/tumblr_inline_pq40p3Oezs1vny3ht_1280.jpg

Ebi Miso Yaki (Miso-Glazed Grilled Prawn) were addictive with the added smoky overtone over the lightly salty miso flavour. The prawns however could be a tad fresher and that will be perfect. Though I still hate to be peeling shell and taking photo at the same time.

https://66.media.tumblr.com/1d40c396eb40251e2808b6d5b4e68656/tumblr_inline_pq40pbWfw81vny3ht_1280.jpg

The plump Teba Karaage (Deep Fried Chicken Wings) was amazingly delectable, crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Of course we had second helpings.

So was the Ika Karaage (Baby Cuttlefish); deep fried to golden brown yet so wonderfully tender with a well-seasoned crispy shell.

https://66.media.tumblr.com/72c77f8f9372c35fa708f3e44f469c0f/tumblr_inline_pq40cwOXGu1vny3ht_1280.jpg

The picture of the Kani Tenpura (One Mouth Crab Tempura) in the menu gave me the impression that the crab pieces are of decent size but alas, they were such tiny crabs. Order this if you need more calcium in your diet. :D/>

https://66.media.tumblr.com/1ea68fa64f41391566f8eaad58abc39b/tumblr_inline_pq40d812981vny3ht_1280.jpg

I think this was the Tori Karaage (Marinated Chicken Pieces) I asked for though in the menu, it doesn’t comes with sauce. Actually the sweetish sauce gave this dish a bigger depth of flavours than if it was to come without.

The Tori Teppan or simply chicken as labeled in the menu came under the Teppanyaki section. Much like those Korean fried chicken with sauce, this one was boneless with a savoury taste. But it was the crispy fried garlic slices that stole the thunder from the chicken. Overall, I would rate this dish excellent.

https://66.media.tumblr.com/3340bf0ac1ba42eebc1b6213ecca3c3c/tumblr_inline_pq3zyjLZ7i1vny3ht_1280.jpg

Both the Ebi Tenpura (Prawn Tempura) and Kisu Tenpura (Fish Tempura) were freshly deep-fried so they were hot and crispy. Would have like more but subsequent orders never materialized.

https://66.media.tumblr.com/8143bdd185db0b292e438cc5d1b28026/tumblr_inline_pq3zysCSFV1vny3ht_1280.jpg

Did someone ordered ice creams? Nope, it was Jagaimo Sarada (Potato Salad). More sweetish than I would have preferred but it was good nonetheless.

https://66.media.tumblr.com/d747743e5597a74fbdffbf41d8637de6/tumblr_inline_pq3zz4hEyC1vny3ht_640.jpg

Gyuniku Shogayaki (Beef with Special Sauce) had thin tender slices of stir-fried beef and onion in special sauce. The meat was fatty enough without being oily and the sauce was well, special. A dish that goes well with white rice.

https://66.media.tumblr.com/b75bd0b95e2e9839c64cde20648488bd/tumblr_inline_pq3zzed85y1vny3ht_1280.jpg

My guess this would be the Tori Hatsu Shioyaki (Grilled Chicken Heart with Salt) but I don’t remembered even ordering it. Anyway, I ended up eating it as I had thought it was beef. :D/>

Shake Teriyaki (Grilled Salmon with Sweet Soy Sauce) – In most places, the teriyaki sauce was too coyly sweet/salty but not here and the salmon was not overcooked, retaining the moist flaky flesh.

https://66.media.tumblr.com/a9c5c7a6339f0db0b7d92a687a273460/tumblr_inline_pq3zrfAN3j1vny3ht_1280.jpg

Normally I love most food items grilled but this Tebasaki Shioyaki (Grilled Chicken Wing with Salt) was a tad dry as they had butterflied the mid-wings. I will sticks to the deep-fried wings instead.

https://66.media.tumblr.com/08f18d1d2076640141e7feafb2d9a86a/tumblr_inline_pq3zrrtirA1vny3ht_1280.jpg

If you don’t appreciate raw garlic then this Ninniku Shioyaki (Grilled Garlic with Salt) might win you over. Gone are the pungent sharp flavour, now replaced with a milder and sweeter taste with a hint of smokiness.

https://66.media.tumblr.com/419f2f4c507dca1c2549f15a38a3ee1d/tumblr_inline_pq3zs0fu2G1vny3ht_1280.jpg

Saba Teriyaki (Grilled Mackerel with Sweet Soy Sauce) was equally good, just like the salmon that came before it. Crispy skin and moist succulent flesh inside.

I placed the order for Aburi Shake Sushi (Seared Salmon) but was served this instead, for which I could not find in the menu. The sauce was sourish at best and doesn’t complement the fish at all. None of us like it.

https://66.media.tumblr.com/11df98974b141b82b6b1d180749b5f5d/tumblr_inline_pq3zgqsvAN1vny3ht_1280.jpg

Luckily the Fancy Unagi Sushi (Grilled Eel topped with Cream Cheese, Crab meat & Tempura Bits) saved the day. The strange combination of toppings actually works like a charm giving the plain unagi a boost in the taste department.

https://66.media.tumblr.com/75c05b2b0f047a5aa5b281fa45492124/tumblr_inline_pq3zgygCcx1vny3ht_1280.jpg

Then came the Spider Temaki (Deep Fried Soft Shell Crab Handroll) that did me in. Someone secretly submitted an order for two more pieces making a total of six. When no one came forward to claim ownership of the two orphaned hand rolls, it’s up to me “disposed” of them and I had to eat three of them. Taste wise, the lack of sauce gave it a rather bland flavour profile.

https://66.media.tumblr.com/f77b043d46e156721d4dd0afaa5150b0/tumblr_inline_pq3zh8PYG31vny3ht_1280.jpg

Crispy Ton Katsu (Deep Fried Pork Loin Chop in Bread Crumbs) but on the dry side. A fattier cut of pork would do wonders for this dish.

https://66.media.tumblr.com/2aa57e23842368942406e654ea8b0187/tumblr_inline_pq3zhtBRSj1vny3ht_1280.jpg

To end the lunch buffet, a scoop of Matcha Red Bean Ice Cream for dessert. Too bad this one is not free flow. You can opt for fresh cut fruits if you don’t have a sweet tooth.

Hey Terence, glad to know you are still active in GCS. Very yummy food you posted. Did you celebrate Mother’s Day too?

My mum not into these kind of celebrations. Though we would buy her favourite durian cake for her birthday or bring her to makan.
