I have never bothered buying Sweet Potato Fries from stores selling Taiwan fried chicken products. Instead, I patronized the Malay store at my office’s canteen, buying their sweet potato fritters at just S$0.50 apiece. When mum bought back this fries today from her trip to the wet market; actually is a stall at the pasar malam (night market) selling it. I gave it a try and quite enjoy the snack which had a salty seasoning that blended in well with the tuber’s sweetness.

Just last month, Gardenia launched their own range of Snack’em Lentil Chips available at limited locations. Sis managed to buy two cans while her colleague helped her buy the other one. At S$2.80 per can, they come in 3 MSG-free flavours – Parmesan Cheese, Kimchi and Curry. I started off with curry but was disappointed with the barely there Asian spice. Next one was the Kimchi which wow me with the zingy sourness and light spiciness. But my choice would be the Parmesan version. You can taste the cheese yet it doesn’t overpower the clean flavour of the papadum-like lentil chips. The chips themselves are light and airy with a very crisp texture. Unfortunately, they seems to be heavy handed with the salt as both my sister and I found it too salty. Also, I understands that the contents might settle a bit when they make their way to the shelves but I am staring at half to less than three-quarter full chips in the containers.

I know I am a few years late, but anyone enjoy HaiTai Sindangdong spicy and sour Tteokbokki Rice Cake Shaped Snacks? Actually, it is more sweet than spicy or sour but they are addictive to eat.

Chinese New Year is just around the corner; pigs are taking centre stage at malls’ decorations, Ang Pao (红包), in music video, soft toys and other festival decorations. They even make foothold in the food category like this Porks-Perity – an adorable pig-shaped bun with fragrant bak kwa, yam and mushroom fillings.

Dinner was 12 pieces of Sushi from NTUC going at a discounted price of S$8. Don’t like the uramaki with black sesame seeds as they are rather hard.

The main ingredients to a good Rojak is in its sauce, a concoction of fermented prawn paste, sugar, lime (or tamarind water) and chilli paste which gives it an appetizing mix of sweet, sour and spiciness. The rest of the ingredients that make up the dish are cucumber, turnip, green mango, pineapple, tau pok (fried beancurd) and youtiao (Chinese dough fritters). To top it off, it is garnished with chopped peanuts and finely sliced pink flower bud of the torch ginger.

Getting a taste of these BAKE Cheese Tarts used to entail long queuing time but not anymore. It doesn’t mean that they are no good now; just that most fickle-minded Singaporeans are off chasing other Instagram-worthy new craze.

Colleague made these Chinese New Year goodies for sale. I was attracted to the cute Butter Pig Cookies and the Pineapple Pastries were delicious too. The actors or actresses shown here were chosen purely based for their appetizing looks rather than acting talent. So lets the food-play begin… :D/>

Unknown Pig A: We are the five pig brothers.

Unknown Pig B: Aren’t we all look-alike?

Unknown Pig C: Call us handsome. Oink!

Photographer (that’s me): Errr, I was the one who asked my colleague to make you presentable. Told her you guys were going in front of the lens. * whispering to myself. And later into my tummy. :D/>

Unknown Pigs (in unison): What!!! We are not natural-born handsome!?

Photographer: * nodding the head. Ain’t she got dainty hands?

https://66.media.tumblr.com/f925784c1d8a33d98d09267ff4eee43e/tumblr_inline_pmablkJ0fP1vny3ht_1280.jpg

Unknown Pigs (in unison): * wolf whistle (trying to change topic)

Unknown Pig D: Who might you girls be?

Unknown Pastries: We are the Pineapple Pastry sisters.

Pineapple Pastry A: I am the older of the two.

Unknown Pig E: I can see that. You’re the bigger (sized) one and bursting at the seams.

Pineapple Pastry A: What to do. This year’s pineapple tarts are so yummy and the BBQ pork heavenly. I can’t stop eating them.

Unknown Pigs (in unison): Ahhh! You ate our cousin!!!

Pineapple Pastry B: * giggling. And all of you are?

Unknown Pigs (in unison): We are the Butter Pig brothers.

https://66.media.tumblr.com/caff2bda8778aef4d4f3e87902dc3261/tumblr_inline_pmabmgUM5P1vny3ht_1280.jpg

Butter Pig E: Oink! You both look so delicious; good enough to eat!

Butter Pigs: *inching closer and closer

Pineapple Pastries: Eek! Don’t come any closer!!! * scream….

https://66.media.tumblr.com/fc74efd0ee2c6f90260df416d6737a30/tumblr_inline_pmabmsR16K1vny3ht_1280.jpg

Butter Pig A: Burp… We should do it again next year.

Butter Pig C: But bro, next year is the Year of the Rat.

Butter Pig A, B, D & E: Nooo… We have got to wait for another 12 years before it’s our turn again!

Disclaimer - The events, characters and firms depicted in the photoplay are fictitious. Any similarity to actual persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental. No animals or cookies were harmed in the making of this recording; the Butter Pig brothers and Pineapple Pastry sisters went home happily down my stomach. Burp…

This is the first time I tried the Curry Chicken Rice bento set at the nearby Zi Char stall. The curry sauce really packed a punch with the added bird’s eye chilli. Don’t think I will order this again next time due to the extra spiciness.

This year Reunion Dinner (团圆饭) was held at the local coffeeshop. It’s our first time having this dinner outside as mum did the cooking all these years. First up, Smoked Salmon Yu Sheng (烟熏三文鱼捞生) get everyone into mood as we toss the different coloured vegetables while saying various auspicious wishes out loud.

Next up was the Braised Crab Meat Shark’s Fin (红烧蟹璜蟹肉鱼翅). Would have preferred another dish but it was part of the standard menu.

Salted Eggs Pork Ribs (咸蛋酱肉扒王) was good with tender pieces of pork coated with a creamy savoury salted egg sauce.

Garlic Crispy Chicken (金蒜脆皮烧鸡) wasn’t too bad, just not crispy enough and it doesn’t come with the usual prawn crackers at the side.

https://66.media.tumblr.com/9707c80bf4b8846a18a873eba3ffaed2/tumblr_inline_pmfxloR4fM1vny3ht_1280.jpg

We finished everything on this plate of Sliced Abalone Fish Maw Spinach (贵妃鲍片鱼鳔菠菜).

https://66.media.tumblr.com/968449d35bd589780cf85a65c09d42d2/tumblr_inline_pmfxlvV4Cf1vny3ht_1280.jpg

Ngoh Hiang or 虾枣 (Five-spice Pork Rolls) was one of the two additional dishes I added. It had crunchy cubes of prawn among the minced pork which we enjoyed. Just one complaint, they could have made it a little smaller in size for easier popping of the whole piece into the mouth.

I added the Mongolian Chicken (蒙古鸡) as it was mum’s favourite but came in a messy presentation with the aluminum foils carelessly wrapped.

Hong Kong Style Steamed Red Snapper Fish (港式蒸红鲷鱼) was unfortunately not served straight from the steamer to the table so it had a bit of fishy taste to it.

https://66.media.tumblr.com/73f97326ead487e53dbc8d0772a90407/tumblr_inline_pmfxdguKqz1vny3ht_1280.jpg

Dang Gui Hua Diao Wine Prawns (当归酒白灼海虾) fared much better and the prawns were fresh and succulent.

They could have at least served this Superior Chinese Sausage Fried Rice (腊味蛋炒饭) at the start of the dinner so we can eat it with the other dishes.

https://66.media.tumblr.com/17d57352618f49ad1b300ce0f1b197d1/tumblr_inline_pmfxdumkbv1vny3ht_1280.jpg

To end the dinner, we had the refreshing Lemon Longan Sea Cocconut (香柠龙眼海底椰) which was given a citrusy twist.

After the success of last year event, my office’s canteen cater asked if we would like to join in for the Abalone Yusheng Lunch at S$12 per head for a table of 8s. So here we are tossing the shredded ingredients into the air and onto the table with chopsticks while saying various auspicious wishes out loud. Hey! Who did that, as an abalone came tumbling onto the tabletop. (¬_¬)

The lunch menu also included either a Chicken Cutlet or Breaded Fish Fillet with fried rice, mushroom soup, free flow drinks and a goodies bag with two mandarin oranges and a 4D ticket. A gift hamper sponsored by the canteen’s boss is the grand prize in the lucky draw.

Châteraisé currently have a new Japanese Apple flavour cream puff. Pardon the condensation on the wrappers as I like to freeze them so they kind of turned into ice cream puffs. It has a nice fruity fragrant but the apple flavour is rather muted and not pronounce. Would have been better if apple more puree is added but at just S$1.90 for the Double Fantasy Cream Puff, I might be asking for too much. The other flavours I bought are Coffee and Matcha though they also sell Original, Chocolate and Mango too.

Châteraisé on the other hand had branched out to many outlets across the island, dramatically cutting down the queues. Memory still run clear of the queue at Isetan Scotts basement waiting to purchase these desserts. This is one of their best seller - Fresh Cream Cake.
