Despite the heavy rain that lasted for almost 2 hours, there were already some members inside the function room.

Do you notice the suitcase below? Ben Chong aka derelor had packed all the setup materials in it for ease of transportation.

With the help from Green Baron, lobsterx and Wilson, a rack was finally erected.

There were also some plant sales by our members.

1. Michelle aka porkchop's well grown african violets.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v330/boonboon0406/GCS%20Gathering%2014%20Apr%202012/GCSGathering14Apr2012MichellesAfricanViolets01.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v330/boonboon0406/GCS%20Gathering%2014%20Apr%202012/GCSGathering14Apr2012MichellesAfricanViolets02.jpg
Growing African Violets is really a chore as they are such fussy plants. I really wonder what keeps Michelle going after so many years.

2. Shawnchen's episcias and begonias.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v330/boonboon0406/GCS%20Gathering%2014%20Apr%202012/GCSGathering14Apr2012EpisciaCollection.jpg

Those in the plastic bags were Ben's water lily plantlets.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v330/boonboon0406/GCS%20Gathering%2014%20Apr%202012/GCSGathering14Apr2012BegoniaCollection.jpg

Two begonias caught my attention. They are Begonia chlorosticta
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v330/boonboon0406/GCS%20Gathering%2014%20Apr%202012/GCSGathering14Apr2012Begoniachlorosticta.jpg

and Begonia soli-mutata
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v330/boonboon0406/GCS%20Gathering%2014%20Apr%202012/GCSGathering14Apr2012Begoniasoli-mutata.jpg

3. Abby's cacti and succulents

Unlike last year inaugural plant competition where there was only one round of voting by members to determine the winners, there were 2 rounds this year. During the first round, members whose plants that were shortlisted were invited to give an introduction of their plants like culture, how they obtain the plant etc so that we can learn and poison one another. :hysterical:/> It is also a good platform to exchange information. Shortlisted plants were then undergone a second round of voting to determine the winners.

Perhaps in the next GCS gathering on 15 Sep 2012, all members who submit their plants for competition must give a short introduction of their plants. :lol:/> Do you all agree? :flowers:/>

Below were the non winning entries by our members regardless of whether they were shortlisted during the first round of voting.

1. Cacti and Succulents

a. Astrophytum asterias 'Super Kabuto' (Alvin Teo Ban Teck aka Alvy)

4. Succulent Mix (Abby Lim)

Abby told the audience that cacti and succulents are very easy and they will just grow for her without any special requirements since her office garden has good direct sunlight. Well, anything will just grow for her. So envious. :ranting2:/>

Vincent told the audience that this plant grew a new bulb every 3 days. :o/> The lower half of the plant had been chopped off to sell away leaving the upper half that was still growing strong and vigorous. Does it do well in apartments where the relative humidity is low like ahem... ?

The 3 winners below will receive a Singapore Gardening Festival 2012 (7-15 Jul 2012) ticket each that were kindly sponsored by Wilson.

TOP PRIZE - Kohleria Mix (Abby Lim)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v330/boonboon0406/GCS%20Gathering%2014%20Apr%202012/GCSGathering14Apr2012KohleriaCollection.jpg

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED PRIZE - Rose (Alvin Teo Ban Teck)

I only know the purple rose in the middle is called Blue Ribbon. Not sure about the rest. Alvin, could you id them for us especially the Kampong Rose at the top with numerous petals? The name is quite nice. Roses are not easy to grow in our climate and selection of the right roses is thus very important.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v330/boonboon0406/GCS%20Gathering%2014%20Apr%202012/GCSGathering14Apr2012Rose.jpg

Alvin shared with us the need to prune roses ruthlessly in order to get good blooms. This method I tried and that was the last time I saw their blooms. :wacko:/> He has more than 20 pots of roses in his collection now. :drool:/>
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v330/boonboon0406/GCS%20Gathering%2014%20Apr%202012/GCSGathering14Apr2012PlantIntroductionAlvinTeoBanTeck.jpg

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED PRIZE - Rosmarinus officinalis (Lionel Teng)

What a huge Rosemary!!! I though it is a fir tree bonsai. :blush:/> Wonder how many roast pork or lamb can this plant make? :drool:/> :drool:/> :drool:/>
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v330/boonboon0406/GCS%20Gathering%2014%20Apr%202012/GCSGathering14Apr2012Rosmarinusofficinalis.jpg

Lionel shared with us 4 important culture of Rosemary.
1. It likes the soil to dry out a little before watering. As Wilson has also pointed out, Rosemary is one of the few mediterranean plants that can be grown in Singapore. Thus Lionel will water his plant only when the tip of the plant start to droop downwards.
2. Next he also shared with us the correct way to harwest the plant for cooking. Do not prune them but to just remove the leaves. I was not sure if my ears were deceiving me as I heard something like new shoots will sprout along this bare section of the stem. :unsure:/>
3. Do not fertilise your Rosemary. Poorer the soil the better. Isn't that nice?
4. Its roots like to anchor onto soil like the way the prop roots of mangrove trees anchored themselves onto swamps. Thus put more soil in the middle of the pot so that a mould is formed to encourage robust root formation.

For more details, please refer to Lionel's blog below or his GCS thread.

If I have known the tilly expert (guess who? :lol:/> ) did not bring any tillies this round, I would have brought my humble looking caput medusae for the competition. Spot the wrong questions. :hysterical:/>

boonboon: Kampong rose is 紫燕飞舞。The petals in the dish are also Kampong rose's. The only different is the one in the cup is cut fresh while the petals belong to a 2 days old flower. The white rose with some red on the petals is Double Delight. The red rose NOID. :rolleyes:/>
