Guys,

I started my garden since Sep 2011 & it's still growing.
Just to share with you guys what I have in my garden.
It's not achieving what I had in mind yet... hopefully it will one day.. soon...
Kinda of impatient already... LOL

My vege garden: I've sweet corns (should be ready for harvesting); Thai Basil, Tumeric plants, Lengkuas plants, Curry leaves, Thai Lime, Calamasi (limau nipis), lemon grass.
http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/Areca%20garden/1.jpg

http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/Areca%20garden/3.jpg

New add on: Lemon basil/mint, Rosemary & Daun laksa.
http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/Areca%20garden/33.jpg

Passion fruit & jasmine. My condo for my passion fruit should be ready in 2 weeks time... LOL.
http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/Areca%20garden/34.jpg

Another condo in progress for my creeper plants. The plant is from my mum's garden. According to her; locally we call it "bunga tongkeng".
The flower is yellow/slight pale orange in color & we make soup with the flowers & it's supposed to be good for eyes.
Hadn't had it since I was a kid. If someone can ID the plant by the description and leaves: it would be great.
Otherwise, I will ask for ID later when it flowers.
http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/Areca%20garden/32.jpg

My Ylang-ylang trees... not very satisfied with the plants; flower not overly fragant as describe by some.
Plant not growing tall... pretty much the same height as the day i planted it there.
http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/Areca%20garden/31.jpg

Rows of Calathea & Heliconias next to the wall.
They are growing but not in height as I would expect them to do so... I guess i'm overly critical.
Most of the new leaves are short... drives me crazy... I guess they had enough sunlight even if they are short... so they keep short..
Do you guys think it's a good idea to cheat them but putting shades over them for a period of time till their are tallers??? LOL. Very tempted to put the black netting all over my garden to sort of cheat the plants to grow taller... but it would look awful to the house & rather troublesome.

http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/Areca%20garden/18.jpg

Sexy pink (bought the plants without seeing the flowers; i hope it's sexy pink.. probably sexy orange too LOL)
http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/Areca%20garden/27.jpg

Some ginger flower plants in my garden; sorry not very good with the scientific names; so i just call them ginger flower.
I'm thinking of getting a Torch Ginger (bunga kantan) for my garden too.... then i can cook Penang Laksa already.
http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/Areca%20garden/17.jpg

Alpinia
http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/Areca%20garden/21.jpg

I have some ferns too in my garden... I grow them under the Calathea or Heliconia.
http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/Areca%20garden/26.jpg

http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/Areca%20garden/8.jpg

Lastly, I need an ID for this plant if anyone can help with it.
Somebody asked me about it when I post my pic in another post but they are not doing well then.
Now, the plants are growing already... i do hope someone can help to ID them.
I have crazy idea as where i will put them in the garden when they are ready; so will keep you guys posted when my house is ready & the plant is bigger... in 1-2 months to go.

Cheers & happy gardening.....

Jacob .... your garden is coming up nicely and it's only 5 mths . It takes a couple of years to grow a garden lush and you will slowly get there. Gardening will test your patience. Make sure your plts get the right amount of sunlight, fertilizer and water and they will be fine. Keep up the good work! Remember to pest control too.

As promised, I'm rising condo for my plants (passion fruit & an unknown creeper).

Pls see the pic of the condo that I built from them LOL.
http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/Areca%20garden/IMG_1223.jpg http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/Areca%20garden/IMG_1224.jpg

I hope they will like it and start to fill up the racks.
After they done that, I will start my orchids collection...

The other plants are doing OK, my Calathea Lutea is still not growing taller even after much lecturing.
My Alpinia (ginger flower) also not behaving well.
I took the corn stalks after harvesting the corn and used them to provide shades for the Alpinia but they are still not growing any taller.

BTW, my Rostrata are going to bloom soon.
The bush is getting denser and slightly taller.

I also added 4 plants to the garden; 2 Rattlesnake Calathea; (red & yellow), 1 pink heliconia & 1 pink single petal lotus.
Sorry, only have the Calathea pics... the other 2; forgot to take pic when I was at the nursery.

Haven't start potting my lotus.
Will post in the coming 2-3 wks time.
Now, I've to start to get busy to do my house.

Jacob

As promised, pls find some of the updated pics of my garden after almost 9 months.
I'm putting before & after pic.

I donated some of the plants to a friend & had a new plant growing in the spot.

My H. Rosrata (right front side).

My vegetable patch; harvest the corns some months back. Now, I'm trying to grow winged bean + french bean but only 1 seed germinated; have to try to back and get a new batch of seeds & give the boss a scolding. I also have brinjals sprouts & asparagus (from a fellow poster) in between the racks.

continue from previous post...

My left side of garden: mostly heliconia & calathea.
First pic was before, the rest were after pics.

http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/Areca%20garden/24.jpg http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/Areca%20garden/IMG_1331.jpg

My right side of the garden: also heliconia & Calathea. I also have Torch ginger among the bushes.
First pic was before, the rest were after pics.

http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/Areca%20garden/6.jpg http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/Areca%20garden/IMG_1323.jpg http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/Areca%20garden/IMG_1324.jpg http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/Areca%20garden/IMG_1325.jpg

New addition to my garden: Roselle.
Grown them from seeds about 3-4 months ago & they seems to ready to bloom & fruit.
However, I noticed that most of the buds are turning yellow & dropped off.
I guess they need fertilizer... hasn't have time to it but I guess I have to be quick.

http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/Areca%20garden/IMG_1333.jpg http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/Areca%20garden/IMG_1338.jpg

I also set up a herbs planter box made out from water gutters hanging on the fence wall behind of the house.
I grow Rosemary; Lemon basil (I think); daun kesum (Laksa leaves); some spring onions & I just sticked a bunch of mints stems & "Mani chai" as I was cooking them over the weekend & chili.
There's a pot on the floor, it's for the grape vine I got from KT Aw (Kulim). A few new leaves came out a couple of days ago... tiny leaves but wasn't sure if they will survive. If the grape vine survived; I'm thinking of setting up a rack above the herbs planter box for the vine to creep.

continue from previous post...

My passion fruit is doing pretty well too.
Below is an old pic where I made rack from them to creep & they had covered most of the racks by now.
As I was taking the pic this morning (2nd pic), I noticed that there are "flower buds like" on the stems... yippee which means I'm getting fruits soon (i hope).

http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/Areca%20garden/IMG_1224.jpg http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/Areca%20garden/IMG_1334.jpg

My bunga tongkeng is doing well too.
Not sure what's the proper name for it but at least that what my parents call them.
Anyone who has an idea the proper name for the plant, pls advice.

http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/Areca%20garden/32.jpg http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/Areca%20garden/IMG_1223.jpg http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/Areca%20garden/IMG_1337.jpg http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/Areca%20garden/IMG_1335.jpg http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/Areca%20garden/IMG_1336.jpg

Well, that's all for now... i hope in another 2-3 months time, I will update my status again.
Happy gardening.

Vegetable patch UPDATES as of 8-1-12:

I started with corns on my vege patch & had harvested the corns months ago.
Result: not overly satisfied with the corns size. It's sweet but some are relatively small.
I guess they didnt get enough fertilizer or they are just consuming too much fertlizer.

Now, I've switched to growing 4wings bean (kacang botol); french bean, 1 bitter gourd; 1 lady fingers & 3 brinjals.

My Kacang botol: too many new shoots branching out all over the place.
Haven't seen any flowers at all; doubted if it's sterile... (choi choi choi) :ranting2:/>
http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/IMG_1452.jpg

My french bean (not too sure how french bean plant look like) & lady finger plant next to each other.
Lady finger seed was sown 2-3 months ago & only 1 turned out to be OK.
No expectation on it since it's a single plant; so I just plant it at one corner.
Now it's around 5-6 feets tall & the stem grith is the size of a thumb.
Again, another problem: not flowering still... dont tell me it's sterile too... (choi choi choi) LOL :ranting2:/>
http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/IMG_1453.jpg

My brinjals: flowering & start fruiting.
So far I grew them in between the kacang botol plants.
Above the brinjal (ard 5.5' tall are wire mesh for the kacang botol.
At the back of this brinjal plant, there's a bitter gourd plant just planted down 2-3 wks ago; it's trying to grow & I hope it will be healthy.

http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/IMG_1451.jpg

Another update on my passion fruit; in my last post I mentioned about flower buds on the plants (around May time frame).
The first few rounds of flowers failed to produce any fruits; I believe it's lacking of fertilizer.
I gave it some chic poo & fruiting fertilizer; lately I noticed some fruits on the plants... yippee!! at least this plant is not sterile.
http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/IMG_1459.jpg

OK, will keep you guys posted.

Happy gardening.

hey jacob

u really like to grow edibles huh?
anyway. those beans .. give it time.. they will eventually flower and fruit..
and sometimes with veggies.. they do need a lot of sun.. without sun.. it will get harder to flower and fruit. so have to be patiend..
at least ur brinjals are doing so well.

keep the updates coming in..
its always more interesting to look at other people's gardens...

Ya Mamat; at least you can harvest something out of it rather just for look.
I like herbs too but there are too many things to learn; not really that patient with that.

Anyway, thanks for the advice about the sun... true enough I think I overlook that factor... was too keen to maximize space usage; hence the structure.

True enough, it's more interesting to look at other's garden; but it would be most interesting to curi... oops.. mintak plants from others... hahaha.

Oi.. No curi2 please..

In my own gfarden I had overlooked the sun factor when I planted rambutan tree.. Now the tree is like not here not there.. And it has been 6 years. The tree was planted in between my side wall and the neighbours side wall. so u can imagine it's stunted growth.. I mean..r ambutan is a sun loving and craving plant.

Now I feel like buying those instant rambutan trees.. Big fruiting ones, just plonk into the soil and it will continue to grow.

Well if i ever be in penang.. I come over and sample ur vegetables ina stir fry .. LOL..

Keep up the gd work.. !!

Mamat,

Welcome, welcome but you have to give 1 week notice in advance so that I can talk my plants into growing fruit... haha.. worst case, buy and hang it on the plant looking as if they came from the plants... LOL :hysterical:/>

Well, over the weekend I was in KL so I got myself some more plants for my garden... yucks.... :hitmyself:/>
Got 2 dendrobiums & 1 pot of oncidium (which I repot twice due to my ignorance) & 6 babies phal (different colors)... whooo so exciting.

http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/IMG_1469.jpg http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/IMG_1467.jpghttp://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/IMG_1473.jpg http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd411/jackal2475/IMG_1481.jpg
The problem is; I ran out of place as where to put them & I'm just not sure if they will survive in my care or not...
I never had any success with orchid.

Bought myself an herb called stevia... interesting herb.
It is a remedy for diabetic folks who yearns for sugar coz the whole plant is sweet.
It is amazing, just munching a piece of the leave; you can taste sweetness immediately.
It tastes like sugar sweet... just amazing..
