I tend to avoid chemicals, really dislike the smell and potential danger ever since I got Captan (fungicide). Now I use isopropyl alcohol and this Bayer Organic Pest Control to combat my problems. I'm thinking of using cornflour one day to combat these pests...

Hi neverend,

How danger is Captan, some nuseries are using Captan... I myself until today did not know that there is a possible CARCINOGENIC effect from Captan.

Despite less smelly that malathio yet Worst off than malathion.

If that is the case, next time round....I will not visit any of the nsery early in the morning! I will go there from noon onwards. that's when the nusery spray "chemicals" in the morning time.

there are & possible Carcinogenic effects

Please refer to my thread for the updates.

Cornmeal/Cornflour is quite an interesting way to combat them, however you need to find a way to keep it dry, and to attract ants to consume it. The expansive properties of cornmeal is harnessed here, so when the ant eats the dry small piece of cornmeal and then proceeds to have a small, lethal sip of water, we get exploding ants!

Casey (skyfiery) and I are going to try that out very soon. We're going to be ANTBUSTERS~

Yikes! Looks like it'll have to stay in that dusty cardboard box forever! Haven't touched it for a long time anyway, been using isopropyl alcohol for fungal problems.

Whatever you are using, hope it suits you.

Just take note that it is flammable. So in case someone is smoking around you while you are using......IPA........

For more information refer to my thread for the MSDS.

So in the end, what is the best solution for ants?

I am currently those ant baits.. seems OK for now. I change those Combat ant baits once in 2 weeks to prevent further onslaught of ants...

Apolpgized if my reply is too lengthy, but I see you are going towards non chemical solution, and so my hands get itchy to type something.

Neem oil can do the job. But on temp solution, meaning that the spraying has to be carried out on a periodic basis. And so is other chemical.

Not possible to get rid of it permemently. And so is other chemical.

There are few brands and price varies. But must ml/SGD to cal which is a better buy. actually cost wise ml/SGD there is no much difference and both works for me. Till date neem oil still works the best for me in terms of my health and my neighbour's health.

I still prefer from growmax.

Neem oil from growmax cost: SGD19++
mix 5ml of neem oil to 1 litre.
Watch out for expire bottles. I got one from the sunset way nursery. and..throw away.
Best to buy from growmax.com.sg direct
When mixed, the solution turns milky white colour

Neem oil from """India"" cost SGD8.90
mix 5ml of neem oil to 1 litre
Watch out for old packaging! Those with handles have very old mfg date like 2005 to 2006.
Best to by those without handles one with mfg date like 2007.
When mixed, the solution turns milky white colour

Off Topic
I don't like those malation or those similar neither.
Bad for health! After spraying malation on my plants, My hands smells when touchs malation, and I don't touch my family till the smell gone, I bath immediately and wash cloths spearatly!
I started off spraying malation without PPE, then it is too smelly, then I started to wear PPE,
then I regetted as the PPE only ensured my health but not to my neighbours.

IMHO,
it is very logically that malation or neem oils works on the ants. Which would you choose?
i Choose neem oil lah... Even nursey owner has to spray malation or similar every now and then to get rid of the insects, but they can't afford to use neem oil, too expensive.

When comes to systematic for those chemicals it claims, makes me feel funny. So what it is systematic? What is the actually duration for systematic? Still nusery owner had to spray those chemicals claimed to be systematically.

Ever read the actually MSDS for malation before?
Those sellers only know and want to make money..not wrong but they should be also trained to explain to customer on the effect of the chemical as well.

Of course MSDS not just for malation BUT for all OTHER CHEMICALS as well!
Check it out first.

<LI>R23, R26 Very toxic by inhalation.

There will be are ppl saying..."so far nothing happen to me". Gd Luck!

But ...who knows in long run?

so
Hi-Neem oil is expensive but is it possible to use neem leaves. I just read an article that
neem leaves and neem seed (from which the oil is extracted) possess the same pesticide properties.
In India they use neem leaves frequently as they are available daily whereas neem seeds only once a year when fruiting starts.

It says they use 1kg of neem leaves and boil them in 5L of water until the green color of leaves is gone.
leave it overnight filter and use it for spraying.
I quess maybe chop leaves in pieces and mix it with soil will also do the trick.u
question is where to get the leaves.
I believe some member may grow neem trees and can spare some leaves to try this method.
So those reading maybe help to supply if they have some leaves to spare.

Another my understanding neem oil does not kill the insects directly like mathalion.
when you spray the pest will still be there moving around but somehow the neem oil induces in them no desire to eat or suck
the juices from the plant. as a result they go hungry and dies.
So if you see the ants still there be patient and let the neem oil do its work.
