Greenhorn's Tillandsia Collection
It was another
humid and scorching day on 20th Feb 2005. The heat apparently did
not stop a handful of Green Culture Singapore (GCS) members from gathering
to have a plant bazaar. For many of us, this was the first time we
saw for ourselves the faces behind the nicknames we used to identify
one another in the forum.
What's
special about this Plant Bazaar is that it was the first plant bazaar
that GCS members ever had. We were grateful towards greenhorn who
offered to have the Plant Bazaar held at his residence. Located
off the Simei Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Station, the three storey
house provided ample space for all to gather. The air-conditioning,
which must not be forgotten, provided much relief from the sweltering
heat outside! Also was he kind enough to have his maid to prepare
delectable finger food for all of us which included fried chicken
and French fries.
As
greenhorn had a collection of Tillandsias for sale, members known
to be extremely active in the bromeliad's discussion thread - benetay,
ExK, ryan, sianned and Wilson - did not fail to turn up. The bazaar
was also attended by non-Tillandsia growers such as orchid-lover
noodle and our African violet guru, bluefly and his family. He brought
a good number of plants which he had ghrown from leaf cuttings himself
to distribute to the members. Another African violet lover turned
up who did not reveal his nickname used in the forum. I am still
trying to guess his nickname. Tsk tsk!

GCS Members around
the table:
From left clockwise - sianned, ryan, wilson, mysterious member,
noodle, greenhorn and bluefly.
There
was a twenty percent discount on Tillandsias so many members
grabbed this opportunity of this great offer and bought home many
plants, including Ryan who bought a huge duratii, clumps
of sticta and even a nice flowering ionanatha 'Albino'
for his good friend Wilson! A huge array of ionantha was also available
for the picking, including the albo-marginata, huamelula,
'Conehead', rubra, var. ionantha and the more common
'Fuego', which was in clumps hanging out in the garden.
Greenhorn
also had a small collection of lithops out in the backyard, together
with rows of xerographica wedged in between two bamboo poles
for support. He even had one huge flowering one at the main display
area, which was an air well, that was definitely a sight to behold!
Other interesting tillandsias for sale that day included the very
sleek "Curly slim", somnians and hammerii. These were
picked up by the more discerning enthusiasts, namely Exk and Benetay.
We
were also in great discussion about the future prospects for Green
Culture Singapore. So lo and behold for new events and exciting
changes to your favorite plant forum! Hence we urge all members
to join us in fun-filled sessions to meet up with fellow plant-lovers!
